During Tough Economic Times, Your Image Gives You That Competitive Edge
Style Tips for Men – October 2008
San Francisco and New York Image Consultant Michelle Sterling says, “During tough economic times, use your image as a resource, a tool to give you that competitive edge. From East Coast to West Coast, always make sure you’re dressed to impress according to your industry standards as 55% of the impression you make is visual!”
During financial crisis and steep job cuts, bankers more than even need to step up their image! Your look needs to be authoritative, official, credible, persuasive, more formal, precise and stable. Wear a navy blue pinstripe or tone-on-tone stripe suit with a blue and yellow pinstripe cuff link shirt differing in scale from each other for harmony.

Pair it with a club tie in yellow and blue small scale patterns with brown or black shoes depending on the lightness (brown) or darkness (black) of your hair. This look is trustworthy, knowledgeable and optimistic about market conditions, not to mention presents polish and professional presence. Grey is another key color for a suit. Avoid wearing black or brown suits and shirts and ties with bold colors especially during challenging times. When in doubt, boring is better.

Techies should bump up their game and wear jackets with their jeans or chinos and a pressed button down shirt and yes, some fashion jeans to stay ahead of the competition.

While some may be rolling their eyes in disagreement, the advantage of fashion jeans is that they actually fit well and can look tailored rather than look like you just rolled out of bed.
Try wearing a brown corduroy blazer, a refined blue tattersall plaid or gingham check shirt with some dark denim and brown leather soled shoes. The look is accessible, receptive, and dependable. People will be more likely to listen to what you have to say and think you’re credible.

And for that rebel inside of you who must deviate from the norm of presenting a polished image. A wing-tip loafer styled with perforations and pinked edges is fashioned from brushed leather for worn-in appeal. At least you’re open to compromising with Image Consultant and Style Expert Michelle Sterling by wearing leather soled shoes.

And for those of you who like the more traditional look and really insist on a rubber sole, choose a discreet rubber sole like this:
Not only will your shoes be in harmony with your brown cord jacket, you will feel better about yourself in clothing!
