If you live in New York and love Chanel, Gucci, Dior, or Hermes, the purchase price of these items are the same in London as they are in New York however instead of paying 8.875% tax you’ll received an approximate 12% tax refund when leaving the country. However the best deals are at Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Prada, and Van Cleef. Van Cleef just raised their prices in New York however have yet to do so in London. So snatch up your favorite Alhambra piece. Their customer service in the Selfridges boutique is far superior than that of Chanel as well in London. If you’ve been on the wait list looking for one of the Chanel classics in New York and were hoping to find it in London, you’ll have to fight the many Arab women from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Quatar, or the UAE. They are used to being served first in their countries so don’t be alarmed if someone tries to step in front of you. As a New Yorker, we’re sure you’ll step right back in front of her or say something.  The Chanel classics sell within minutes during the day with daily deliveries except for Sunday so we recommend calling ahead to ensure the one you want is in stock to avoid running all over London. However please be advised they do not hold bags at Chanel London.

If you’re from Dubai and are shopping in New York this summer, prices for luxury brands are the same in Dubai and you’ll pay the American sales tax of the state you visit as well which will not be refunded upon your departure. However if you’re interested in purchasing American brands, you will certainly save money on designers such as DVF, J Brand, Alice and Olivia, Theory, Tory Burch and Michael Kors.  The Spring / Summer collection of these brands are also on sale right now, so it’s the best time to go before Ramadan. If you love shopping sales, America still has the best sales and best prices for clothing and shoes. So save your shopping at H&M and Zara for New York as you won’t pay sales tax on low ticket items. New York only has 8.875% sales tax on items over $110.  Or visit the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlet in up-state New York to get deals on Dior, Gucci, Armani, D&G, Versace, Prada, YSL, and Valentino, just to name a few.  Europeans, Chinese, and Indians have been coming here for years for the previous season’s must haves.

And if you are from London, spending your holidays in New York, you’ll probably do better purchasing High Street items in London especially at Top Shop and Miss Selfridges.  However if you’re interested in American contemporary designers such as Milly, Nanette Lapore, DVF, Alice + Olivia, Marc by Marc Jacobs, BCBG and Theory, then you’ll find the best selection and value for these items in New York. Go visit Saks and Bergdorf Goodman on the 5th floor, as well as Bloomingdales on the second floor. These items are at rock bottom prices right now at 60 to 70% off.
