6 Mistakes Men Make with Their Look
Shoes make a difference! A common mistake is wearing thick soled shoes with a suit. That’s a no-no! When you’re wearing something tailored and refined, your shoes should reflect that same refinement.
Your look or your Dad’s look. If your look hasn’t changed in the last 5 to 10 years, it’s time for an update or else your image will communicate, “I’m out of date.” And instead of getting that promotion, you’ll be getting a demotion. Contact a style consultant if you need help.
Dressing like a bum. Casual office attire, often breeds the same in behavior. Did you rise through the ranks in your office just so someone might mistake you for a bum? While wearing jeans to work has become increasingly common on the West Coast, professionals on the East Coast know that back to business means back to suits. Think tailored to refine your look.
Wearing a sports watch for business. Sports watches are named that for a reason. Unless you work in an environment where sporty attire is acceptable, trade in your Timex for a Rolex.
Going to a meeting without being properly groomed. Be sure to follow proper hygiene, and shower and SHAVE before a meeting. The cool, relaxed, disheveled looks are best kept out of the boardroom. Someone might assume that your unpolished look relates to the quality of your work.
The Wallet. If it’s worn out, ripped or falling apart, it’s time for a new one. And if it’s overstuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey, clean it up. Order in your wallet reflects some order in your life.
And for those of you who are shaking your heads in disagreement because you are an engineer or work in the technology field, looking well put together is as important for a banker as it is for you. You may not be expected to wear a suit and tie to work; however, your clothing should reflect the logical, methodical, and organized individuals you are. Wearing shorts or jeans with a t-shirt and sneakers certainly does not reflect your brain thrust. What it does say is that you need a shower!
Have at least one lace up pair of black shoes and brown shoes. The great thing about plain lace ups is that you can dress them up or down if the have a thin sole. Try to alternate your shoes everyday to let them breath and they will last longer. If you only wear black shoes or only wear brown shoes, make sure you have two different pairs for alternate use.
A crisp white shirt. Everyone should have at least one crisp, white shirt in his closet. It’s a basic and a classic and is appropriate for every occasion. If you find a plain weave to be boring, purchase one with some texture.

Pleated or plain front trousers, who can keep up with fashion? Many of you don’t have time to keep up with the trends or you just don’t care. So approach your trousers in the following manner: if you’re thick around the belly, you’ll probably want trousers with pleats and cuffs to give you more room. And if you’re in good shape, flat front trousers will compliment your body type better.

The trend shirt. Updating a look as a male is easier than a female. Just be sure to purchase a few fashionable shirts with interesting designs or textures every season. Shirts with cuff links are currently in style even if worn without the cuff links.
Invest in a nice, classic belt. Most men don’t know that accessories make a difference. Purchasing a reversible, high quality, leather black and brown belt for over $100 will last you years and help pull your outfit together – not to mention match your new shoes.
